On January 1, 2026, Joschka Philipps — member of the UBT Peace and Conflict Research Network — was appointed as Professor at the new Chair of Sociology of Insecurity at the University of Bayreuth.

With his interdisciplinary background and international experience, Joschka Philipps' appointment further strengthens and consolidates peace and conflict research at the University of Bayreuth and beyond.

His prior research at the University of Basel focused on urban youth protest, political violence, and various forms of insecurity in African contexts. For the past five years, Prof. Philipps has led the Junior Research Group Politics of the Unknown at the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence and served as interim professor at the Chair for Sociology in Africa at UBT.
